Created for 'Parade' at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1981. It depicts an acrobat perfoming a handstand in front of an audience. This original poster by Hockney is very rare. Hockney created costume and stage designs for several opera productions during his career, combining his love of music, painting, and theatre. in 1981 he was invited to work on the ballet 'Parade' alongside two shorter operas. 'Parade' was first created in 1917 by Jean Cocteau and Eric Satie with original designs by Picasso. Hockney's own designs deliveratley reference the bygone Parisian circus characters and cubist style of Picasso. Hockney's exuberent theatre designs later culmintaed in the important travelling exhibition 'Hockney Paints the Stage'.
